Has traditional analogue CCTV had it's day?

With the increase in popularity of IP CCTV and the introduction of HD solutions over coaxial based systems, analogue CCTV systems are slowly becoming a thing of the past. If you are looking to purchase a whole new fresh system and do not have any existing cabling already in place then there are other avenues you should explore before committing to an analogue system. While analogue CCTV has lost its popularity, this is not to say that it is going away any time soon. It still has its advantages, with its strong cross brand compatibility, making it a very cost effective way for people with existing analogue systems to replace faulty cameras.

Unfortunately analogue CCTV just cannot compete with the other technologies when image quality is taken into consideration, which most of the time is the end users most important factor to consider. Analogue CCTV picture quality is measured in TVL (TV Lines) with the current maximum being 1000. The highest possible recording resolution at the moment is 960H (976x582) which pales in comparison to 1080P (1920x1080) being common place in CCTV. Taking this into consideration along with the falling costs of the other technologies capable of achieving more desirable resolutions, it is difficult to recommend standard analogue to anybody looking to install a brand new system.
