I bought this NVR in conjunction with two turret 5mp Vale cameras (a separate review for the cameras has also been written). Overall, I was very impressed with the product. Audible noise from the unit was not too bad and from a single (small) fan cooling the CPU.

Setup was fine though had a bit of trouble with the initial stages. In my case, I was connecting the NVR to an HDMI monitor that didn't work. In the end, I decided to set the NVR via the web browser, once I figured out the default IP address was actually 192.167.1.50 (i.e. not as given in the manual). Via the web browser, you are then able to change the video output setting so as to be compatible with the monitor.

I bought a separate 2.5" SSD (2TB) which for the two cameras purchased was enough for 10-14 days of continuous recording at high quality, variable bit rate and 20 FPS. I reckon this could be extended to 4 weeks with further refinement. The NVR is designed for a single 3.5" disk but there are sufficient holes in the base to secure a 2.5" disk in place.

The NVR works seemlessly with the Vale cameras purchased, so I'm very happy with the purchase made. Furthermore, the phone/ tablet app works well and is well designed.

The NVR web browser gives loads of options and advanced features though most of these I have not experimented with. Interesting features include face detection and body count (though these are probably specific to the camera itself). The web app also informs you of the storage space left and the voltage drawn per PPPoe socket. For the Vale cameras I bought, this NVR is able to power 4 cameras with significant power to spare. A useful NVR related option (which is presumably standard for all NVRs) is the ability to automatically overwrite the oldest footage once the hard drive is full.

I bought this along with two Vale 5MP cameras (for which I have also written a review for on cctvkits website) and the appropriate junction boxes (which are essential to house the ethernet connector if you can't have this situated inside).

I opted for a 2TB SSD so simply bought the NVR without any hard disk (at the time CCTVkits were only offering the NVR with pre-installed mechanical disks
(i.e. standard hard disk drives)). As I wanted a low maintenance system, I opted for a slightly expensive 2TB SSD.

The NVR is of good quality and relatively easy to setup. Initially, I had trouble setting this up since I couldn't get a feed to an (hdmi) monitor. Eventually, I setup the NVR via the web browser once I figured out the default IP address was 192.172.1.50. once in, you can then change the video output option to HDMI at 1080p. With hindsight, had I connected the monitor using the VGA connector, this may well have worked first time.

Apart from this initial setup hiccup, all subsequent experience has been excellent. Access to the footage is best via the phone,/tablet app which is very easy to use. Note, make sure you set up the cameras using the QR codes that are stuck on the body of the camera (so do this before you install the camera up high on the wall!).

With 2TB if storage and saving footage continuously from two 5MP cameras at 20fps, with a variable bit rate and at the almost the best quality available, I was able to get 10-14 days of footage. Options in the NVR allow you to then over write the oldest footage, so I essentially get the last two weeks of footage. Obviously, opting for a larger HDD will extend this (cctvkits offers an option to have 6TB disk installed so enough for 4-6 weeks with my setup). With only 2TB I reckon I could extend to 4 weeks relatively easily though by modifying the options available to me (framerate, optimising area of interest, bit rate and possibly motion detection during some or all of the day).

The web browser gives you a lot of detail (e.g. the voltage drawn from the cameras attached and hard disk space remaining,) and loads of advanced features I haven't got round to trying (face detection sounds like a neat feature). Audible noise from the NVR is okay. There is a single fan inside situated above the NVR cpu which makes a bit of noise but it is not that noticeable really.
